with farms and vegetable patches, is
tended by the people who live in the
terracotta-roofed homes, with shutters
painted yellow and red.
Food is prepared on board and
served at your table, along with Swiss
wines and apres-lunch liqueurs. We
arrive on time, precisely 6.10pm, ready
for a dinner of fondue. Surrounded by
the Alps, sitting on a sparkling lake,
St Moritz is spellbinding, shimmering
until late evening on one of its 322
days of sunshine per year.
In summer, the main activities are
golf and hiking along the area’s many
trails. More than 100 hotels offer free
travel on the mountain railways, cable-
cars, chairlifts and funiculars when you
stay more than two nights. I take it easy
and relax with a hot chocolate.
Then it’s a four-hour ride to Lucerne,
home of the crooked wooden Chapel
Bridge, an Old Town of wonderful
murals on mediaeval walls, and the
popular Swiss Museum of Transport.
From Lucerne, just an hour to Basel,
is where Scenic Tours river cruises
depart. The transition from train to
ship is easy: the number 18 tram (also
free with Swiss Pass) takes travellers
to the port. Boarding the Scenic Ruby,
I find a decor as lovely as that of
Switzerland’s luxury hotels, but with
my own butler, meals and an open bar
included in the price.
A familiar feeling washes over me
as we set sail down the Rhine: river
cruising is very much like rail travel.
Even the long vessel is shaped similarly
to a train carriage; and as it glides along
the waterway, a floating track, again I
watch the scenery pass by my window.
Scenic Ruby transports 160
passengers past Germany’s riverside
villages, with side trips to the Black
Forest, Heidelberg Castle, Cologne
Cathedral and the Alsace wine route
of France. It’s an enlightening wind-
down to my rail-and-sail sojourn:
enjoying five-star service and waking
up in new places every day. •
