Home' Get Up and Go : Spring 2013 Contents 16 GetUp&Go
Your first holiday?
The Blue Mountains, west of Sydney
staying at the Hydro Majestic in
Medlow Bath. As a young child, the
hotel with its huge open spaces, high
ceilings and dramatic views seemed so
grand. All the child-friendly activities
such as horse riding and bike riding;
organised games and hikes and special
evening events – housie housie, fancy
dress, mad hatters and talent quests
were a dream come true! A meal
in the grand dining room was never
complete without pink lemonade.
My first trip to Israel with my family
at the age of nine. The fragrance of
the orange groves, the hustle and
bustle of the busy cities and the
colours and smells of the markets
have stayed with me.
Favourite Australian holiday
Hamilton Island - all members of the
family are catered for and that there
is the choice of activities and dining
facilities whilst still being on an island.
Favourite overseas destination?
New Zealand – it is a stunning country
with so many nooks and crannies to
discover, an easy place to navigate and
it offers so much in terms of diversity
of landscape, great food and wine.
Who do you organise the reunion/
milestone events for?
Anyone and everyone! 50th birthdays
in Bali in a private villa, resplendent
with fire dancers and fireworks; 60th
birthdays in Thailand in a beautiful
resort releasing floating lanterns,
children and grandchildren celebrating
with you; wedding vow renewals in
Tahiti with a beach party...
Has intergenerational holidays
become a big part of your business?
increasing and constitute a large part
of the business. Everyone is so busy
with work, raising families and life
in general that going away together
enables them to spend meaningful
time with one another.
What is the best destination, say,
for a 60th birthday, bringing the kids
and grandkids along?
Club Meds and resorts that cater to
kids of all ages and cruising work well
for bringing the different generations
along for a celebration. Everyone is
And is it resorts, hotels or villas that
work best for this type of group?
It is whatever the family is in to and
that can include camp sites as well! We
tailor each journey and the event itself
to the person celebrating the milestone.
We hear that family trips for Bar
Mitzvahs are on the cards too?
My love of Israel as a nine- year-old
led me to live and study there for nine
years in my late teens/early 20s and
I began my career in the hospitality
industry in Jerusalem. I speak fluent
Hebrew and many people have asked
me for planning tips on celebrating
their son’s Bar Mitzvah or daughter’s
Bat Mitzvah in Israel. I organised five
Bar Mitzvahs in Israel in the first year
of Celebration Journeys’ existence
and this trend is increasing in the
community in Australia.
Easiest to organise – Europe, USA
or Asia and why?
Easiest? Any country that is English-
speaking and shares a similar culture to
Australia, such as New Zealand, the UK
and USA. However, I LOVE a challenge
so language and cultural differences
only enhance the planning and bring
additional perspectives to the trip.
And your personal best travel tip?
Always ensure you have a change of
clothes and basic toiletries in your
hand luggage and ALWAYS ask to see
your bag tags to check that they are
tagged to the correct destination and
that they are indeed tagged! And hold
on to those receipts! •
