The number of Australians taking
a cruise holiday continues to
surge. The International Cruise
Council Australasia reveals that
last year the industry experienced
its strongest growth in five years, with Australia, New
Zealand and South Pacific cruises attracting the largest
numbers of passengers.
In the dark ages of Australians cruising, travellers had to
fly to Singapore, Hong Kong, ports in Europe and the USA
to pick up a cruise of a decent length of sailing days. Now,
you can hardly move in Sydney Harbour because of ships
to-ing and fro-ing in and out of the heads!
Not quite, but you get my drift. We’ve featured cruising
in this issue so you have a different look at what’s available.
South American cruising through the Magellan Straits offers
up icebergs, wildlife and a pristine environment to view
before settling into the comforts of the stylish Veendam; a
cruise around the coast of Ireland and the opportunity to
visit splendid gardens is a novelty; ever tried a few days on
a canal, barging gently through the backwaters of France?
And a river cruise with mother and daughter sailing together
worked out very nicely – no blood shed! We have one writer
who has been converted to cruising after being a cruise cynic
and on a slow boat along the Mekong, there’s no better way
to be introduced to Vietnam and Cambodia.
This year is the 100th anniversary of the Tour de France,
so, on yer bike and read all about how nice Nice is.
At home sweet home: go walking in Tasmania and on
Kangaroo Island, taste test Launceston, fly north to Cape
tribulation and get wet and wild during Darwin’s wet season.
Also, don’t forget to enter the competition for a $10,000
voucher towards a ‘Discover Italy’ holiday with Odyssey
Happy travels. •
Yes, I am standing in water up
past my waist! In Coles Bay on
a Saffire excursion to an oyster
farm. We waded out, the table
in the bay was set with a white
table cloth, and we shucked our
oysters and washed them down
with champagne – not a bad day
in the bay!
Sail away, and
Come travelling with me!
