I’m perched on a stool at Bar 25
Degrees, a gourmet burger joint
oozing retro LA feel. Across the
road at the Chinese Theatre a throng of
shabby Spidermen, Star Wars characters
and a mini Mr T vie for attention.
It’s hard to tell if they are beggars or
working for tour operators, though I
did give money to the pierced man who
held the sign ‘too ugly for prostitution’.
Bar 25 Degrees is part of the
Hollywood Roosevelt hotel. Founded
in 1928 and the location of the first
ever Academy Awards in 1929, the
hotel has housed real stars for more
than 80 years.
From the lobby on Hollywood
Boulevard you can see where Michelle
Pfeiffer crooned in The Fabulous
Baker Boys (1989) and the stairways
where Bill Bojangles Robinson taught
Shirley Temple to dance in The
Little Colonel (1935). It is hard to
photograph the area (one of the subtle
tactics employed to keep paparazzi
out and stars in); the light is candle-
amp and flattering. Immediately you
notice a quieter, pixilated world, like
you have stepped back in time.
The stairs lead up to the Oscar
Room and The Spare Room, a vintage
gaming parlour which attracts the
young and hip.
In the foyer, Marilyn Monroe’s
infamous mirror (where guests
reported seeing Marilyn in the
mirror behind them) has been
displayed but is currently
in storage. It’s behind the
hotel, near the Tropicana
Poolside Bar that Marilyn
lived in a bungalow for years
despite having her home in
Brentwood where she would
Marilyn’s room is surpris-
ingly humble and the double
bed is crammed into a crevice.
Her ghost is said to remain
here. During the renovations of the
bungalows in 2005, Guest Relations
Manager Albert Sousa, was taking
a group of Chinese businessmen
through the worksite when suddenly
every door in the corridor opened and
‘Every hair on the back of my neck
stood up,’ says Sousa.
Perhaps Marilyn didn’t approve of
Although Marilyn lived in many
hotels this is the one where she has the
most history – the pool is where Norma
Jean did her first ever photo shoot.
Sousa shares some anecdotes about
room 928. This is the room where
Montgomery Cliff lived for three
months while making From Here to
Eternity (1953) and where he practised
his bugle playing. On occasions guests
have complained about music coming
from 928 at night, when “nobody has
been booked in the room and CCTV
shows nobody has come or gone”.
With a thousand rooms, you’d be
lucky to meet a dead star, but you
might catch a glimpse of a living star.
The Penthouse suite is where Clarke
Gable and Carole Lombard carried on
an affair. Today’s regulars include Cher
and Angelina Jolie. Its rooftop deck
is behind the iconic sign ‘Hollywood
Roosevelt’. From here you see the
high school stadium where Sandy and
Danny sang in Grease (1978) and
the observatory from Rebel Without
A Cause (1955), not to mention the
Staying at a hotel in Hollywood would leave any
guest starstruck, but this one has ghosts and
glamour. Justine Kelly reports.
If you find footprints on our beaches, chances are
they’re yours. Our pristine surf and stunning natural
wonders are still in original condition after all this
time. Along with a 3,000 year-old tradition of
hospitality that’s as warm as it is timeless.
