Do you ever find there’s a theme
running through your life? Well,
the theme that has tailored my
travelling over the past five months
is: mountains and lakes. In June
I travelled to Austria for a few
days to catch up on what’s new in
Vienna and then drove south to
the overwhelmingly lovely region of Saltzkammergut, an
historic area that has been a holiday destination of lakes
and mountains for centuries – and the money-spinner for
the Hapsburg Empire with the mining of salt – gold to the
Next, a few days in New Zealand’s Queenstown, more
mountains, and the mighty Lake Wakatipu. Staying at two
properties overlooking the lake I was close to being held
captive by the ever-changing mood of the Remarkables.
And writing this now, I’m on a very fast train, hurtling
along between Lugano and Zurich in Switzerland. I’ve
had seven days of mountains and lakes – vast, inland seas
where nothing stays the same. The mood of the country as
an Indian summer lingers is a gift and every day is buoyant
and cheerful. The cows are happy, the goats frisky and every
Swiss person I see is out and about, walking, cycling, eating
al fresco and enjoying the sunny days.
In Switzerland I have travelled by train, motor boat,
steam paddler, bus, cable car, gondola, funicular, cogwheel
train and high speed intercity trains – and viewing
mountains and lakes all the way!
Make plans now for your next holiday. Train across
Australia, cruise in Europe, a trip into the Swiss Alps in a
cable car, a walking tour in Austria, or a road trip.
Whatever way, get up and go now – time’s a wastin’; there
are people to meet, lakes to cross and mountains to climb.
Come travelling with me!
