Home' Get Up and Go : Spring 2012 Contents 16 GetUp&Go
When Paris Hilton made her
grand entrance at South
Africa’s stunning Earth
Lodge she arrived with 17 Louis
Vuitton bags. I arrive at the exclusive
lodge in the Sabi Sabi Private Game
Reserve with one dusty suitcase.
Still I reckon I have enough clothes
for all occasions and quickly change
into my ‘safari’ gear for my first game
drive perched in an open Land Rover.
I thought safari style shirts and
pants, in fact khaki from head to toe,
would be the norm.
Wrong – when I arrive I am
confronted by a Spanish couple who
look like they are going to the beach,
an Aussie St Kilda supporter wearing
a bright Saints tee-shirt and a Swiss
doctor wearing fluoro yellow.
But game drive fashions are
soon forgotten as we embark on a
memorable drive that encounters the
Big Five within the first hour and lots
of other animals.
A lion and her cubs are spotted
roadside, an elephant with ears
flapping does a mock charge at us, a
leopard is dining on an unfortunate
impala, buffalos are spotted grazing
happily and several rhinos are seen
munching away in the bushveld.
Back at Earth Lodge, the most
futuristic of four five-star lodges in
Sabi Sabi which follow a theme of
‘yesterday, today and tomorrow, we
are greeted with warm towels and a
Inside the architectural masterpiece,
it is a toss-up between the panorama
of bushveld or the decor that
demands the most attention.
Built into the slope of the ground,
the 13 luxurious suite lodge, which
opened a decade ago, was refurbished
Textured walls made from sand and
grass entice you to touch the surface,
while furniture crafted from timber
reclaimed after the floods of 2000 or
uprooted by elephants leave you in
admiration of such artistic talent.
Twigs and branches fashioned into
intricate rustic chandeliers adorn the
ceilings and all decor from the leather
lounges to the artwork reflects the
colours of this part of the world.
A popular haunt for some is the
day bar, where high teas and cocktails
White muslin-enclosed salas entice
you to relax or you can dangle your
feet in ankle deep water while sitting
at stone topped tables inside the pool.
Breakfast and lunch are served
in the indoor/outdoor dining area
overlooking a waterhole frequented
by animals, so watch and listen.
There’s everything from a wine cellar
filled with exclusive drops – 6000 of
them – an intimate library, art gallery,
meditation garden and an Amani Spa.
After dinner a ranger escorts guests
back to their havens, just in case of
an unwanted up close and personal
encounter with animals.
The spacious suites that are
sculptured into the slope of the
earth are decorated with an eclectic
collection of objets d’art, comfy
couches and an egg-shaped bath.
On the patio which has panoramic
views to the bushveld there is a
plunge pool and an outdoor shower.
I am reluctant to leave Earth Lodge
after memorable encounters and
delights from wild animals to safari
Lastly, a message to Paris Hilton –
you don’t need 17 Louis Vuitton bags,
and to myself – go easy on the khaki. •
