SOFT ADVENTURE: TERRIFIC PACIFIC
Cruising around Samoa’s
‘big island’ of Savai’i, with
glorious hymns pouring from
the radio and the air-con on high, the
passing traffic grabs our attention.
In some places drivers might wave
a hand or lift a finger in cheerful
acknowledgement. Here, they flick
their indicators to give a friendly
wink. My driving companion hoots
in delight – turns out no one does this
on the busier main island of Upolu
where he’s from. So he winks back
every chance he gets.
Things are certainly different on
Savai’i – and amiable drivers are
only the start. To a first-time visitor,
Samoa’s two largest and most popular
islands might seem like twin tropical
paradises. Yet Savai’i is blessed not
only with extreme natural beauty
but a relaxed way of life so alluring
that those who live on Upolu dream
of wiling away a few lazy days on
Getting to Savai’i is easy. You can
walk onto the inter-island ferry for
the 90-minute crossing and either be
picked up by your accommodation
or hire a taxi (about $88 for a day’s
hire). Many, however, drive their
rental car onto the ferry so they can
explore Savai’i at their own pace.
Our first stop is Alofaaga
Blowholes on the island’s south-
west tip. After paying $2 a person
to villagers manning the open-sided
thatch hut (fale) at the entrance – all
land in Samoa belongs to someone
and a small fee is paid at every
attraction – a person accompanies
you on the bumpy drive through
to the blowholes about a kilometre
away. He or she then puts on a
performance, ‘calling’ up the waves
before tossing coconut husks into the
blowhole where salt water jets shoot
them into the air like cannonballs.
Our guy, who’s been doing this for
20 years, is either an expert caller
or expert reader of the ocean – the
second he finishes his performance,
the waves eerily and immediately stop
shooting through the blowhole.
We double back along the south
coast to cool off at Afu Aau waterfall
($2 a person; no change rooms so
wear your swimmers under your
clothes). This wonderful waterhole

and a relaxed way of life, Samoa

Like taking the road less travelled? Like to live
without a computer voice giving you directions?
Then venture forth to Samoa.
Wind your way around our islands and you’ll
discover spectacular waterfalls, dramatic
blowholes, stunning coral reefs and crystal clear
lagoons where you can swim with turtles.
You’ll also meet wonderfully relaxed and welcoming
people. Unless it’s a Sunday, when most families
will go to church, make ‘toonai’ (Sunday lunch) and
rest for the day, then you may have a little trouble
finding someone to ask for directions!
Samoans adhere to a 3,000 year old tradition
called Fa’a Samoa which places great emphasis on
traditional values like respect for family and elders.
It’s their way of knowing where they’re going in life.
